3AS L test on counterfeiting

Post by Guest on Mon Jan 23, 2012 7:57 pm

TEST (3AS / L)

Read the text then do the activities

In many parts of the world, people are engaged in unethical activities. This is mainly due to the absence of legal structures to control their business. Besides, illiteracy and poverty have helped the spread of these acts. The illegal means used by these people enable them to acquire vast fortunes and immense influence over their communities.

We also find that bribery and embezzlement of public funds take alarming proportions in many countries. Similarly, the unauthorized sale of arms and the marketing of suspicious medicines proved to be harmful. In addition to this, many products such as clothes, toys, and mobile phones are counterfeited without any respect to their inventors or the regulations for their safe use and quality. Fake products lead to considerable loss in profits of the legitimate producers who lose not only in profits but also jobs. Meanwhile the state doesn’t receive any tax revenues.

All these violations of law and morality weaken the resources of the state and harm the social conditions of the citizens.

1- Write the letter which corresponds to the right answer

A/ People are engaged in unethical practices because of :

a- The influence of their communities

b- Lack of structures to control business

B/ Bribery and embezzlement are committed by:

a- Corrupt people

b- Honest people

c- The state

C/ These unethical practices enable some people to:

b- develop the economy of their country

c- become rich and powerful

2- Answer the following questions according to the text:

a- How do some people gain vast fortunes?

b- What unethical practices are mentioned in the second paragraph?

c- Have illiteracy and poverty contributed to the spread of such practices?

3- In which paragraph is it mentioned that:

a- Counterfeit products have negative effects on the country’s economy?

b- The non – respect of the law is harmful to both societies and the individuals?

4- Copy the title you think is most appropriate:

a- Fake medicines and health

b- Unethical activities

c- Bribery and embezzlement

5- Find in the text words whose definitions follow:

a- Actions which do not follow the code of ethics (§1) = ……………

b- Not permitted by the law (§2) = ………….

6- Which verbs can be derived from the following nouns? Embezzlement – Violation – respect – quality – legality – sale – product – loss

7- join the sentences given using the words between brackets:

a- Embezzlement has a harmful effect on the economy of countries. Governments should pass more severe laws to protect citizens’ interests. (such...........that)

b- Many people are engaged in unethical practices. They lose their probity and moral judgement. (so.......that)

c- People fight corruption. They are aware of its impact on the individual as well as the society. (provided that)

d- They keep their probity and integrity. They are not attempted by unethical practices. (as long as)

8-You' ve bought a "Dove shampoo" thinking it was genuine. Later on, you realized that it was fake. Write an opinion article for your school magazine to denounce the harmful effects of counterfeit products on people’s safety and the country ‘s economy.
